I was thinking about writing about all the planning and prep that went into the beach shoot…but honestly, it gets a bit boring. Then I was going to write about how I go to great lengths for interesting angles. But I got sick of the self-praise.
So simply put…I take risks.
I wasn’t always so willing. I used to be scared to take risks. And I still am a lot of times. Continue reading

August 16, 2010 by Edmond H LeeMike and Jem’s Wedding and Beach Shoot
I’ve known Mike and Jem for some time now. And I had the privilege of taking pictures at their engagement (literally at the moment when Mike proposed). So, it was with great pleasure that I photographed their wedding.
After the wedding, we went out to Heckscher State Park, out in East Islip, Long Island. We had scouted out the location a few weeks beforehand, so we knew exactly where we wanted to be and what time we needed to be there.
A lot of planning and a lot of blood, sweat, and tears (literally all 3)…but it was all worth it. Continue reading →

August 11, 2010 by Edmond H LeeStarting Back Up With My Friend Tim Kang
I’ve been friends with Tim Kang for quite some time now. I consider him to be one of the most naturally talented photographers I’ve had the privilege of getting to know personally. We originally met through music circles since we both play guitar.
I still remember…back in 2005…Tim got his first dSLR. I don’t even remember how we started talking about it. I wasn’t really involved with photography at the time. I still new all the basics from what I learned from my dad when I was in high school, but I hadn’t touched a camera in ages. Continue reading →

I started covering music shows when I was working at a startup music studio back in 2001. I didn’t do it out of love for photography. I wasn’t even really into photography at the time. We just need photos of some of our artists and I turned out to be the best qualified. So, I dusted off my Nikon 6006, bought a few rolls of the highest ISO films I could find, and went at it. I got what we needed and went back to music business as usual. Continue reading →

June 10, 2010 by Edmond H LeeThe Paper Boy
I wasn’t popular in elementary or junior high. I was a small, scrawny kid, and for the most part, I tried to either fit in or just not get beat up. That all changed when I got to high school, but I made it a point to never forget my roots. Continue reading →

May 25, 2010 by Edmond H LeeHere I am
It’s been a long time since I posted anything. I’ve still been busy with a lot of retouching. Also been scouting locations for a couple of upcoming weddings, had some headshot sessions, and got to cover Yellowman play as part of a benefit show at the Central Park Zoo. I’ll be posting photos from all of that in the next month or two.
I had the chance to go to a poetry workshop one of my grad school profs runs. I haven’t been going as much (haven’t even been writing much) over this past year because I’ve been so focused on photography and starting up the business. And I must say, it feels really good to get back into writing.
I’ve also had the chance to get to know some of my photog peers. Had some great discussions. Lots of great ideas.
Thrown into the mix of these last few weeks…I’ve been preparing to see the Cremaster series at the IFC Center this coming Sunday. I’ve only seen part 3 in the past, so this will be my first time seeing the other 4 parts. I’m a bit anxious…it’s going to be a 7 hour marathon of Matthew Barney madness.
Also got the latest issue of Ninth Letter. It’s my favorite literary publication. Comes out of the University of Illinois in Urbana.
Oh, and re-watched Bladerunner, Dune, and The Thin Red Line.
All of these things have compounded and put me in a very contemplative mood. I’ve been reflecting a lot on photography, poetry, and art in general. Been thinking about time and space. Death and life. Heavy metal and hardcore.
I’ve been feeling it for some time now. A sense of creeping emptiness. A lulling apathy. Just doing my thing, trying to survive. A sense of something lost. Something numb.
I realize now what it is. The most important emotion for my creative process…it’s anger. Not that I go around kicking little puppies and yelling at people. It’s not an anger directed at people. It’s a quiet, cold-burning anger that most people would never notice. I think when people meet me, they get a sense that there’s a certain peacefulness in me. And that’s true. Because I’m very much at peace with my anger.
So, the anger is back, and it’s good. This summer’s going to be interesting. I’m going to spend a lot of time and money on personal projects…got some wild ideas in mind and I’m going to push really hard to make them happen.
Condensed lyrics from Underoath‘s song, “Emergency Broadcast: The End Is Near”:
At the end, of it all,
We will be sold for parts.
We will try to rebuild,
But we ate it all away. All ambitions now run dry.
Someone stop this thing,
Turn it off.
In search of new life.
Nothing will be left to walk the Earth again. Our hopes and dreams,
Will be swallowed alive. We always said, it wouldn’t end up like this.
We will be the new ice age.
We will be the new plague.
Disguised as a colony.
We will wipe them all away.Feast your eyes.
Or just rip ‘em out.
This is it for us.
It’s time to panic. We always said, it wouldn’t end.
It wouldn’t end up, like this.
We are the cancer.
We are the virus.
Tell me it’s not too late.

April 5, 2010 by Edmond H LeeChase – Sharing Ideas
Yesterday, amidst my hours of retouching, I was able to watch the live feed of Chase Jarvis‘ talk at the TEDx event at Carnegie Mellon University. Chase talked about “Fearlessness in Creativity.” It was a good talk…he’s a good speaker, and some of the live chat was also quite entertaining at the same time.
Chase’s main point was the sharing of ideas. He’s always been big on that. On his blog, he frequently posts behind-the-scenes videos, gives out background info on shoots, talks about thought processes, etc. This type of info used to be hoarded by top photographers. Successful photographers didn’t want to give away all of their secrets, otherwise they felt that they would lose their edge on their competition. People like Chase, David Hobby (aka The Strobist), Joe McNally, and many others are changing that now through their blogs and books (links to all in the right sidebar).
One of the fears that Chase brings up about the sharing of ideas is, what happens when someone else takes one of your ideas and runs with it?

April 5, 2010 by Edmond H LeeDrowning in Blemishes and I Need A Stove Top
If you’ve been wondering why I’ve been rather quiet lately…it’s because I’m in the midst of retouching a whole lotta photos.
By whole lotta, I mean over 1000. A bunch of weddings jobs have been piling up and I’m trying to get through as many zits, blemishes, stray hairs, and random pieces of lint as I can. I also have a wedding gig to process, and some pre-production work to do for an upcoming shoot.
So…just a bit swamped.
At any rate, I’m planning to take a trip out to a junkyard on Saturday. Anyone interested in coming?
I need to find a top of a stove (meaning the part with the burners).
Or if anyone out there has a stove I could chop up…please let me know!
Gas range would be preferred.

March 31, 2010 by Edmond H LeePhoto Op: Invitation to be Stupid (with cameras)
UPDATE: I have a ton of work on my plate right now, so I’m aiming to go on 4/24. Hopefully it’ll also be warmer by then.
I need to get out of the city.
Or maybe I just need a break from my routine. Whatever it is, I feel the need to plan a mini-photo trip.
I started to think about the last few workshops I’ve run, about some of the projects I’m working on, and I decided that I want to take a day out to run around with some friends and be silly. To go out and take random pics of/with friends with no real project in mind. I was thinking of breaking out my film cameras and using up a few rolls. Maybe bring the dSLR along too…but to be sure to NOT use the LCD at all. No reviewing of the pics until back home.
And then I read this on Chase Jarvis’ blog:
4. Roadtrip with a twist. Take a trip with 4 of your best friends out to the coast camping in the summertime, or the desert in the autumn. Tell them to bring interesting clothes and props. Whatever they can dig up. Seek the strange. Stop off at a thrift store and buy some strange stuff that will act as muses for you. Shoot at least 500 images…all the ‘off’ moments, not single posed image. And here’s the kicker. Do it with film. The oldest film you can find, expired Portra 400 color print film. And an old camera. A holga perhaps, or an old hasselblad (cheap rental). Or (gasp) a 35mm point and shoot. Get the negs scanned at the local lab when you get home. Price: Gas plus food plus $400 in film expenses. $40 in junk from the thrift store. You’ll get priceless moments of those people closest to you. And you’ll be experimenting all the while…
I’m planning on going 4/3, 4/10, or 4/24, depending on weather and people’s schedules. This would be a day trip.
There won’t be a lesson This isn’t a workshop. But if you ask a question while we’re out there, it’s not like I’d ignore you.
You can use a digital camera. You don’t need to use film. But you do have to be willing to be photographed.
I don’t know what our destination will be yet. I don’t even know which direction we would start off in…so details will come, and I’m open to suggestions.
Let me know if you’re interested. Email me at info@edmondhlee.com (or my other email addresses if you have them), or leave a comment.
Space will be very limited.
Ohh…we’d be starting off from NYC (if you didn’t know that that’s where I live).

March 31, 2010 by Edmond H LeeA New Start?
I had my web server upgraded. Everything was backed up and good to go…but problems arose with programming issues.
In any case…this blog took a major hit and I had to basically start from scratch. So, if you were following this blog via email or RSS feed, you might need to resubscribe.
Got a lot of posts cooking in my head…just no time to sit down and type them out.
I’ll be blogging regularly again soon!!
